Cultural Weekend, 2009
Saturday 28 & Sunday 29 November, Hochhauser Auditorium, Sackler Centre 10.30–17.30
An Exploration of British Caribbean Heritage
View films including features, shorts, clips and footage that discuss the themes of British and Caribbean history from the 19th century to the current day. Be educated, informed, at times amused with JEMIMA & JOHNNY, and at other times informed, but most of all you'll be proud and inspired by the contributions made to British society by communities embarking on the shores of the 'Motherland,' as it was known.
Screenings include THE POWER OF BLACK HAIR, made by school children in the London Borough of Newham aged between nine and eleven at the time. In DOMINOES AND BINGO you'll hear first hand accounts from senior citizens on how far communities have progressed, settled and become part of British society. The weekend will take you on a journey of sorts, that transgresses from the first Black seaman arriving the UK, in TIGER BAY, who later served (and died) for Queen and Country in World War II, to the early settlers in Ladbroke Grove, and Notting Hill, in FROM YOU WERE BLACK YOU WERE OUT, giving rise to racist riots in 1958, and birth to Carnival. At times hard hitting the films offer a historical timeline to the advancement of communities in Britain today.
We are delighted to announce this year’s distinguished guest is film director Horace Ove, CBE. Heralded as Britain’s first Black filmmaker, these special screenings, shown courtesy of event sponsors BFI, depict the British and Caribbean experiences of the 1960’s and remind us of the many actors and actresses whose on screen contributions ‘back in the day’ brought joy and a sense of belonging to the many viewers who had made the journey from the Caribbean to be part of ‘Queen and country,’ yet rarely found similarities to themselves in the images and characters portrayed on television or in the cinema.
PRESSURE, portrays the struggles of identity between the new generation of young British teenagers, against that of the strong Christian beliefs of Caribbean families and the reality of life in Britain at the time. A Sunday Times review of the film defines the film perfectly: “With wit, vigour and compassion, it examines the causes and effects of tensions in a multi-racial society and its impact is real and timely”.
An ALL STAR CAST is presented in - PLAYING AWAY. Set against the backdrop of the traditional game of Cricket in an English county, the film mixes comedy with racial realisms and beautifully captures the genre, and presents an outstanding array of British talent in their youth.
We invite you to spend the weekend exploring Black British heritage, and to meet the man HORACE OVE, CBE who hails from the island of Trinidad, and continues to make pivotal contributions to the British film industry. He has unquestionably paved the way for many, of all nationalities, to learn and follow in his footsteps.
To that end the finale to this year's programme, and indeed the Victoria and Albert Museum's Black Heritage season is JINGLE BLUES, JINGLE BELLS, a modern and particularly realistic take on the festive season in these credit crunching, and recessionary times. Romantic, and comedic in places the film was written and directed by actor Sylvester Williams (Eastenders, Bullet Boy), and ushers in new British talent in line with the event’s theme, from Generation to Generation.
